The Shipra, also known as the Kshipra, is a river in Madhya Pradesh , India. The river rises in the kakri bardi hills Vindhya
Range north of Dhar,the word Shipra is used as a symbol of “purity” (of soul, emotions, body, etc.) or “chastity” or “clarity".In Indian Acient Mythology the river get its formation form Lord Vishnu Blood flow.
The holy city of Ujjain is located on the right bank of the Shipra River. The famous Kumbha Mela takes place in the ghats of this city,
once every 12 years, a yearly celebration of the river goddess Kshipra. There are hundreds of Hindu shrines along the banks of the Shipra River.
Every evening “Shipra Aarti”, the offering of lit oil lamps to the river takes place. This was popular with the pilgrims. Thousands of small lamps are set afloat on the river on rafts of leaves and flowers. It is believed that the north-bound Shipra takes these offerings to the abode of Lord Siva in the Himalayas.
Due to recent Water crises Narmada water out of the reserved water to be released into released to Kshipra river near village Ujjaini in Indore district. From there, Narmada water will flow into Kshipra River upto Ujjain. According to preliminary estimates, water will be lifted upto 348 meter height during its 49 kilometer long course. For this, lift irrigation pumps will be installed at four places.
Release of Narmada water into Kshipra River will also recharge and increase groundwater table in the region
These River Joining project is held at Ujjaini a Small place near Indore where the water from river Narmada in lifted into the Shipra.you can also visit to see how two rivers are actually Joined.
There are several Ghats for devotees to take a holy dip in river Shirpa some of which are Ram Ghat, Triveni Ghat,Gau Ghat, Mangalnath Ghat, Siddh Ghat , Kabir Ghat,Bhuki Mata Ghat.
Note: In Kumbh Mela the Ghats of Shirpa river are covered by fencing and several thousand of Ghat Rakshak(Swimmers to protect) is placed their.Ram Ghat is the Oldest Ghat.

belief that a dip in the river washes away their sins. All pilgrims take
a ritual dip in the river before heading to Sabarimala. Pilgrims also
perform ‘pitru tarpanam’ (offering to ancestors) before starting the
trek to the shrine. People also come here to perform funeral rites for
the departed souls.
